How the Amazon Effect is Impacting the Corrugated Industry

The steady increase in demand for corrugated packaging is attributed to the growth in online retailing. This boom in online commerce is known as the “Amazon Effect”.

The corrugated industry faces two challenges due to the Amazon effect:

  • Record demand: Corrugated cardboard is seeing unprecedented demand which is expected to increase thanks to the Amazon effect. For example, products made in Asia are packaged in an attractive box and then re-packaged in North America before being shipped. Corrugated board converters around the world must have the people and technology to grow this sector.
  • Material shortage: Because consumer space in blue boxes is so limited, many households end up dropping their corrugated boxes into their household garbage bags, which are then sent out directly to the landfill. As a result, there are fewer recycled materials available for the packaging industry to meet growing demand, leading to higher costs.
